New Mortal Kombat Announced

Don't call it a comeback. From the ashes of Midway games; Mortal Kombat is making its glorious return to 2-D fighting. Today Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment announced a new Mortal Kombat game for next-gen systems. Newly renamed NetherRealm Studios will developing the game, led by series creator Ed Boon.

The new game is going back to its roots bringing back the classic 2-D fighting platform, gratuitous blood, gore, and fatalities. The game will also feature a new tag team feature and is said to have "the deepest story mode of any fighting game."

A gameplay trailer accompanied the announcement which showcased in-game footage resembling the classic MK2 days. While no official word on how many characters will be making an appearance in the game, the trailer features more than a few memorable characters.

Sub-Zero, Sektor, Johnny Cage, Mileena, Reptile, Shao Khan, Raiden, Kung Lao, and Knight Wolf are all featured in the trailer. Noticeably absent are series favorites Scorpian, Sonya Blade, and Liu Kang. The fighting action looks very similar to Mortal Kombat 2, with the addition of the tag team attacks. It does appear that some of the gore has been toned down as pools of blood are not pouring out as characters are hit. However, the end of the trailer gives a tease of a fatality performed by Kung Lao which looks disgustingly delightful.

Just tell me when to put in the blood code, it's been engrained in my head ever since 1993. A,B,A,C,A,B,B.

The new Mortal Kombat is scheduled for a 2011 release date.
